Total assets
Total liabilities
Net worth
How the calculation works
Every asset line you fill in is added together, and every liability line is added together. Negative or non-numeric entries are ignored. Net worth is the first total minus the second.
Net worth = total assets − total liabilities
Key assumptions
- Values are what you enter. Use realistic sale values for assets, and today’s balances for debts.
- Illiquid assets such as property are included at the value you give; they cannot always be sold quickly or at that value.
- Taxes that might arise on selling assets are not deducted.
- Only the lines shown are included. Add other items to the closest matching line.
Worked example
Assets of 12,000.50 + 40,000 + 85,000 + 300,000 + 15,000 and liabilities of 220,000 + 9,000 + 14,000 + 2,500.75 (figures in US dollars):
- Total assets: 452,000.50
- Total liabilities: 245,500.75
- Net worth: 206,499.75
How to interpret the result
A single figure matters less than its direction. Recalculate on a fixed schedule and compare. If net worth is negative, that records a starting point, not a verdict. If most of it sits in one illiquid asset, remember that it is not the same as cash you can spend.
Common mistakes
- Valuing assets at what you paid or hope to receive.
- Leaving out small debts such as store cards or informal loans.
- Mixing valuation methods from one review to the next.
- Counting an asset twice, for example a business and the account that holds its cash.
